Our practice has been serving Pittsburgh and its suburbs for over half a century.  It is well respected by the community and its peers.  Our well trained staff is courteous and caring.  Our board certified ophthalmologists provide high quality medical and surgical eye care and are members of the teaching faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  The practice includes a full service optical dispensary.

 Dr. MikullaJohn M. Mikulla M.D., F.A.C.S. 

Dr. Mikulla is a native of the area having been born and raised in Glassport, PA. He is a 1974 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  After a year in Washington, D.C. where he completed medical internship training at the George Washington University Hospital and attended the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, he returned to Pittsburgh to complete his Ophthalmology specialty training at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology Eye and Ear Hospital.  In 1978 he joined Medical and Surgical Eye Associates.  He is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and an elected Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to his practice duties, he has been involved in various professional and civic activities and organizations.  He holds the academic appointment of Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology serving as instructor of eye surgery for over 20 years.  He is past president of the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society, an organization that serves over 120 Ophthalmologists from the tri-state area.  In his community he is past president of the Forest Hills Lions Club.  He is an invited speaker at various community groups throughout the Pittsburgh area.

He is an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Allegheny County Medical Society and the American Medical Association.  He is an active staff member at UPMC Eye and Ear Institute, UPMC Presbyterian University/ Montefiore Hospitals, and UPMC Shadyside. He is also on staff of the UPMC Monroeville Surgery Center and the Waterfront Surgery Center.

 Dr. BrownJoel D. Brown M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Brown was born in Oklahoma, but spent the majority of his childhood in Latrobe, PA where he completed high school.  He split his undergraduate years between Denison University and the University of London where he completed a B.S. in chemistry.  He returned to Pittsburgh to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, graduating in 1990.  Following completion of medical school, Dr. Brown completed his first graduate year in Internal Medicine at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital.  Dr. Brown then spent the following year as a research fellow at the University of Kentucky where he stayed to complete his specialty training in Ophthalmology.  Dr. Brown was Chief Resident during his last year at the University of Kentucky.  He returned home in 1996 and joined Medical and Surgical Eye Associates.  He is board certified in Ophthalmology and an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Brown is also directly involved in teaching the residents at UPMC Eye and Ear Hospital where he is a Clinical Instructor.  He has also been a surgical tutor over the past 8 years for the ophthalmology resident at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oakland.  During his research years, he had several abstracts and articles published in the development and testing of the gancyclovir implant for CMV retinitis.  He has spoken at national meetings including ARVO and CLAO.

Dr. Brown now practices comprehensive ophthalmology with a subspecialty in cataract and refractive surgery including LASIK.  All refractive procedures are performed at the Laser Center at UPMC Eye and Ear Institute using the VISX laser system.  He is an active staff member at UPMC Presbyterian University/Montefiore Hospitals, UPMC Shadyside Hospital, UPMC St. Margarets Medical Center, and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital-Allegheny Health System. He is also on the staff of the UPMC Monroeville Surgery Center.

He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Allegheny County Medical Society.

 

 Seth A. Holst, M.DDr. Holst.

Dr. Holst was born in Philadelphia, PA and moved to the Pittsburgh area early in his childhood.  He was raised in Monroeville, and is a graduate of Gateway High School.  He completed his undergraduate education at The Pennsylvania State University, where he majored in Biology/Vertebrate Physiology.  He received his M.D. degree from The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  After completing his internship year at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, he moved to the Washington, DC area, where he spent three years in the Ophthalmology residency program of Georgetown University.  Upon completion of his Ophthalmology training, he joined a general ophthalmology practice in Rockville, MD, where he practiced for three years.

Dr. Holst moved back home to Pittsburgh, and joined Medical and Surgical Eye Associates in 2005.  He is a board certified Ophthalmologist, and a staff member at UPMC Presbyterian University/Montefiore Hospitals and UPMC Shadyside Hospital. He is also on the staff of the UPMC Monroeville Surgery Center and the Waterfront Surgery Center .  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society.
